I spent the weekend camping on Saturna Island. Total travel cost was $38 (ferry, gas and wear and tear). I frequent the gulf islands so I picked up a BC ferries experience card (like a reloadable gift card). They are free to pick up at the major BC terminals. This card allows you to get a discount on ferry routes to the gulf islands. You just have to load a minimum of $95 to get the discount. It cost me $33 for a car and myself to take a round trip ferry from Swartz bay to Saturna.
I made some dinner using a portable camping stove and the Pad Thai back packers dinner at east point park. I then found a spot to park and sleep in my corolla (I replaced the back seat with a custom built bed). There are showers available on the island. Shower tokens can be purchased at the local pub. I personally choose to camp in my car because its cheaper and avoids the hassle of finding a camp site. I then spent a few hours hiking and exploring at winter cove before heading back home the next day. Pick up a tourist map on the ferry to Saturna. You won’t be disappointed.
